Are Dogs Allowed on Siesta Key?

There is nothing better than spending a sunny afternoon with your toes in powdery white sand as you make your way into stunning turquoise water to cool off. Although, some would argue that it would be even better if you were joined by your best furry friend, and here at Best Western Siesta Key, we may agree. However, there are a few reasons as to why dogs are not allowed on Siesta Key Beach, one of the main reasons being we simply want one of the best beaches in the world to remain that way. So while the surrounding area of Siesta Key is extremely dog friendly, the only true beach in the area where your four-legged friends can swim with you and dig in the sand is Brohard Paw Park in Venice.
Why Are Dogs Not Allowed on Siesta Key Beaches?
Even the best pet parents cannot be aware of every little thing their fur baby does at the beach. The most watchful eye still might not be able to stop an excited puppy from wanting to play and chase birds or ensure all bathroom breaks are done in the grass. To keep the Siesta Key Beaches clean, healthy, and safe for wildlife, dogs and other pets are unfortunately not allowed.
Soil and sand found on Siesta Key and other beaches are vulnerable to bacteria, and urine and fecal matter also pollute the glistening water. In addition, protected birds, like the Snowy Plover, who have made their home on Siesta Key Beach are easily frightened by dogs and pets. This makes it difficult to protect their nest and young, as they rarely return if they are scared away. Not only is it important to follow the rules of Siesta Key to protect its natural beauty and wildlife, but pet owners who disregard the law can be fined $50 for a first-time offense or $200 for a second-time offense.
Where Can I Take My Dog Instead of Siesta Key Beach?
Dog Parks
Social dogs will love a vacation to Siesta Key where there are numerous fenced-in “paw parks” for them to run around and make new friends. While not they don’t offer sand and waves, dog parks near Siesta Key are bursting at the seams with playful playmates, obstacle courses, grassy fields, water fountains, and some even have kiddie pools. Pack up your fur baby and check out 17th Street Paw Park, Lakeview Paw Park, Creekwood Dog Park, Christopher Wheeler Dog Park, or Arlington Park.
Walking Trails
If you are looking to spend some quality one-on-one time with your best furry friend, exploring nature areas and lush vibrant trails full of Florida’s best vegetation is one of the best ways to do so near Siesta Key. Instead of taking a long walk on the beach with your dog, an alternative is to grab their leash and check out some local favorite dog-friendly walking trails, like Red Bug Slough Reserve, Robinson Preserve, Oscar Scherer State Park, Joan M. Durante Park, Celery Fields, Bird Key Beach Park, and Nathan Benderson Park.
Restaurants
Most bars and restaurants with outside seating are very pet and dog friendly and even accommodate your furry pals with their own water dish. If you are looking to keep your toes in the sand or soak in the waterfront views, we recommend dining with your pup at Turtle Beach Pub & Grill, O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill, Old Salty Dog, New Pass Grill, or Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill. Before you arrive, it is always best to call ahead to confirm if Fido is allowed to join your party.
Although bringing along your favorite fur-child to the beach with you sounds like a dream, there are many other ways to enjoy your Siesta Key vacation together. From paw parks and hiking to relaxing at your favorite outdoor restaurant, you will not only be spending fun quality time together but also helping to protect and preserve the breathtaking beauty of Siesta Key. For more dog-friendly ways to plan a memorable and entertaining vacation for both you and Fido, your local friends here at Best Western Siesta Key are always ready with more recommendations.
