Beyond Siesta Key: Discovering Florida’s Spring System
Posted by Best Western Siesta Key onJuly 31, 2023 in Florida Nature Trails, Kayaking, Things To Do.

While spending your days lounging on the beach, swimming in our Sand Dollar Pool, and exploring the vibrant local community are all fun vacation activities, don’t miss the opportunity to discover some of Florida’s best-kept secrets: its natural springs. Siesta Key’s central location provides easy access to these charming Old Florida destinations, making for perfect day trips away from Best Western Siesta Key. There are hundreds of these blue water jewels in the state, but some of the closest are Warm Mineral Springs, Lithia Springs, Weeki Wachee Springs, Homosassa Springs, and the springs of Crystal River.
Soak in the Healing Waters of Warm Mineral Springs
Warm Mineral Springs is the closest spot for soaking and swimming on our list, located just 40 minutes to the south in North Port. The water is believed to have healing properties due to its exceptionally high mineral content — possibly the highest of any natural springs in the United States. The temperature hovers around 85 degrees all year round, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing dip that eases your muscles and dissolves stress and tension. If you’re on a budget, like most of the springs in Florida, the cost of admission to Warm Mineral Springs is low at only $11 per person (non-resident).
Go for a Swim and a Hike at Lithia Springs
Head northeast from Best Western Siesta Key for about an hour and 15 minutes and you’ll come to Lithia Springs. Known for its clear, blue-green waters ideal for swimming, Lithia Springs eventually flows into the nearby Alafia River. It’s great for cooling off in the hot summer months, especially, though you can visit all year round as the water temperature is always 72 degrees. The cost is only $2 per car (and $2 per person for swimming). If you prefer to stay on land, there are hiking trails and picnic tables, but a dip in this popular swimming hole is the major draw to the park.
Paddle Weeki Wachee Springs and See Real Life Mermaids
Two hours north of Siesta Key, you’ll come across the famous Weeki Wachee Springs. This park is more than just a natural wonder; it’s also home to the famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids. The shows they perform in, which have been entertaining audiences since the 1940s, combine underwater choreography with music and storytelling — an authentic Old Florida experience. Weeki Wachee Springs is also a popular destination for kayakers and paddleboarders, as the river winds for 12 miles through beautiful scenery into the Gulf of Mexico. Keep your eye out for manatees and all the wildlife that call this river and spring home. Admission is $13 for adults and $8 for kids 6 to 12. Kids under 5 are free.
Learn About Wildlife and More at Homosassa Springs
Homosassa Springs is a must-visit destination about two hours and 15 minutes north of Siesta Key for those who love animals. As a wildlife state park, it serves as a sanctuary for both wild and captive animals, including manatees, flamingos, black bears, alligators, and the oldest hippopotamus in human care. The underwater observatory lets you glance at the spring bowl from below, putting you up close and personal with the fish and manatees who visit. You can also enjoy the sound of native Florida birds singing above you while strolling on an elevated boardwalk nestled beneath a canopy of trees. Admission is $13 for adults and $5 for children under 5.
Cross an Item Off Your Bucket List in Crystal River
Two and a half hours north of Siesta Key you’ll find Crystal River, the manatee capital of the world; this area is another must-see destination for animal lovers. The many springs in the King’s Bay Wildlife Refuge provide a safe place for manatees during the cooler months, when visitors can encounter these gentle giants in their natural habitat. While snorkeling with the manatees is strictly regulated to ensure their well-being, you can still legally swim with them with a reputable outfitter. It is a profound and awe-inspiring experience that will stay with you long after you leave. Price varies based on your tour operator.
When staying at the Best Western Siesta Key, your vacation extends far beyond the beaches. The proximity to Florida’s natural springs opens up a world of exploration that will make your trip to the Sunshine State unforgettable.
