Exploring Longboat Key, Siesta Key’s Neighbor to the North
Posted by Best Western Siesta Key onJuly 5, 2023 in General.

Nestled on the Gulf Coast of Florida adjacent to Siesta Key, Longboat Key is a skinny barrier island that spans 11 miles. Like its neighbor, Longboat Key has ample white sand beaches, sparkling turquoise waters, and a rich natural landscape. It also has fun activities for tourists and great places to dine. Join the experts here at Best Western Siesta Key as we take a brief tour of this local gem.
Beaches the Locals Love to Visit
Siesta Key is, as most know, a world-famous beach destination. However, Longboat Key has several sunny spots that the locals enjoy on their days off — and you can too. On the northern end, head to Beer Can Island for an intimate environment that feels like a tropical escape. Pull up in a motorboat or paddle out by kayak, or drive in and park as long as it’s not too crowded. There is also Whitney Beach, a popular spot perfect for families looking to spend a day on the sand. In either location, keep your eyes peeled for the manatees and dolphins that live in the Gulf and nearby Sarasota Bay.
Restaurants and Dining for Hungry Visitors
There are many restaurants for every budget and palate worth checking out on Longboat Key. On the north end of the island you’ll find Whitney’s; once a gas station, this converted restaurant now serves up casual beach classics and delicious cocktails fit for a higher price point. Not far away is Harry’s Continental Kitchen, an upscale deli with dine-in and takeout options and an excellent wine selection. For fine dining, Euphemia Haye offers guests elevated eclectic menu options situated in a quaint garden setting. And for lunch or dinner with a stunning view of the bay, the Dry Dock on the south end of Longboat Key is the perfect place to taste the area’s best seafood.
Embrace Nature at Joan M. Durante Park
Joan M. Durante Park is one of the best places on Longboat Key for viewing Florida’s environment in its natural state. This 32-acre open space has walking trails, landscaped gardens, and stunning views of Sarasota Bay perfect for selfies. Take a walk through the mangroves while you look for birds like osprey, egrets, herons, or even roseate spoonbills. You’ll pass by native plants like banyan trees, live oaks, sable palms, and more. Kids will enjoy the small toddler-approved playground with equipment made from recycled materials. Don’t forget to enjoy a picnic lunch in the covered pavilion overlooking the pond before you go.
A Destination Golfers Won’t Want to Miss
Longboat Key is a golfer’s paradise with several top-rated golf courses featuring scenic views and challenging fairways. Tee off at the Harbourside Golf Course at the exclusive Longboat Key Club, known for its beautiful water features and flawless greens. Another great destination is the award-winning Islandside Golf Course, which is right next to the Gulf of Mexico; it’s known for its watery challenges. Just be sure to check ahead of time regarding entrance fees and policies.
Explore the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium
Lovers of marine life will want to make time for a stop at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, or as locals call it, the Mote. This world-class marine research facility offers an up-close opportunity to view sea turtles, manatees, sharks, otters, stingrays, and more. Though the facility is a popular destination for kids and families, you can indulge your inner child no matter how old you are. The Mote also helps rescue local wildlife, helping to heal injuries and save the lives of dolphins, manatees, and turtles.
Whether you’re seeking additional beach spots, delicious dining, or simply a walk through the park, Longboat Key invites you to explore its indoor and outdoor gems. The experts at Best Western Siesta Key are happy to provide you with all of the recommendations you need for a fun day trip on our neighbor to the north.
