Ten Games That Are Perfect for Any Beach Day!

Sunbathing and floating in the ocean might seem appealing to many beachgoers, but for those who have a hard time sitting still or prefer to engage the whole family with beach activities, it might sound boring. Luckily, the team here at Best Western Siesta Key put their heads together and compiled a list of their favorite beach games for friends and family to play together on the sand. From traditional games like bocce ball to classic sports like soccer and volleyball and new modern games made for the beach, this list has it all.
Volleyball
One of the most classic beach sports is volleyball. Whether beach volleyball reminds you of a classic film set on the coast or fond memories of playing volleyball with your toes in the sand with friends or family, this game will never go out of style. When you spend time on Siesta Key Beach, keep an eye out for a collection of volleyball nets, or bring a ball to pass back and forth near the water.
Soccer
Siesta Key’s white-sand beaches are the perfect spots for playing soccer since the sand stays cool, even on the hottest summer days. Enjoy kicking a soccer ball back and forth with a partner or create teams and set up nets on the beach. A little friendly competition by the tranquil, turquoise Gulf of Mexico sounds like the perfect afternoon to us.
Frisbee
Tossing a frisbee across the beach, especially during golden hour as the sun begins to set, is another classic way to spend time on Siesta Key. This is a great sport to enjoy both on the sand with tons of space to run and jump, and in the water where it’s calm, clear, and cool. It is always a good idea to make sure your frisbee can float and is a bright color that you can easily spot, just in case someone misses a catch.
Cornhole
While cornhole is a popular game to play in your backyard or at BBQs and cookouts, we also enjoy bringing portable cornhole boards to the beach. Some sets that are specifically made for the beach even come with empty pouches that you can fill up with sand from Siesta Key to create the bean bags. Other boards are lightweight and foldable, making it a convenient game to carry with your beach gear.
Paddle Ball
You might remember playing paddle ball on the beach when you were a kid or with your kids who may now be adults. This timeless game is still enjoying its days in the sunshine as many kids, young and old, still love hitting the ball back and forth while spending an afternoon on the beach.
Bocce Ball
This is one game that can truly bring the whole family together on the beach, from toddlers and teens to parents and grandparents. Bocce ball is easy, exciting, and great for the beach as most sets come in a compact carrying case. The object of the game is to toss your ball and get it to roll as close to the smaller ball, called the pallino, as you can. The best part is that you can play a large game of bocce ball with multiple teams or hold a small one-on-one competition.
Ladder Toss
Ladder Ball is another game that is often found in backyards but can also be ideal for a beach day with family or friends. If you are unfamiliar with the game, ladder ball consists of two teams, two ladders with three horizontal bars, and two sets of bolas. Each bar is worth either one, two, or three points and the goal is to toss the bolas so the rope hangs on one of the bars. Once a team reaches 21 points the game is over and they are deemed the winners!
Spikeball
Combining two popular childhood games, volleyball and four square, spikeball is a more thrilling and competitive game. Two teams battle it out to see who can return the ball to the net, which is taught and sits in the middle of a circle. By bouncing and hitting the ball between players and the net, this game has “beach fun” written all over it.
TidalBall
Another marriage between two beloved games is TidalBall, which includes elements of cornhole and bocce ball. Before the game begins, you will need to dig two holes in the sand that are about ten paces apart from one another and place a “trench ball” behind each hole. Two teams of two players compete against each other as they try their best to toss and/or roll their ball into the hole. Three points are awarded if the team’s ball lands in the hole and one point is won if it lands close to the trench ball.
Bucket Ball
Bucket Ball is an entertaining way to make “beer pong” family-friendly and larger than life! Created for the beach, Bucket Ball comes with six big blue buckets and six big orange buckets that are set up in triangles, similar to the way you set up solo cups for pong. Grab one of the balls and begin tossing it into the other team’s buckets. The first team to clear all of the buckets from their opponent wins. You can also play with beach balls to make it even more exciting for the little ones.
Unleash your competitive side during your next beach vacation and bond with your family over a little friendly competition. For those who love playing games, the beach is one of the best places to get your loved ones together and create fun memories. We look forward to welcoming you to Florida’s stunning Gulf Coast and Best Western Siesta Key.
