The Kissing Statue
Why is it here?
This sculpture was created by Seward Johnson in a series to commemorate the veterans of WW2 and the passion that peace brings to all of us.
What's the Controvery?
This statue commemorates a famous picture taken in Times Square on the day victory was announced. George, drunk on the Unconditional Surrender and alcohol, grabbed Greta, a stranger to him, and forced a kiss on her. Although many Sarasotans enjoy our memorial to the end of WW2, having a 26-foot statue of the assault of Greta Zimmer in such a prominent position of town can feel uncomfortable.
There's so much art to see here. Come explore Sarasota.
